Bark, mulch, sand and soil in Yakima

Screened topsoil, compost and Problend potting soil for beds and gardens; bark and red fir mulch on top; mason, washed concrete and white sand for the jobs that need sand.

Chapter 01

Soil for a bed is not soil for a lawn

Screened soil has had the lumps and stones sifted out, which is what you typically want under a new lawn or in a bed you are about to plant. Unscreened costs less per yard and tends to suit fill, rough grading and low spots where nobody will be digging in it by hand.

Compost and our Composted Steer Fertilizer are for working into the soil you already have. Spread a layer over the bed and turn it in, and the ground gets heavier on organics without a full soil swap.

For pots, raised beds and containers there is Problend Potting Soil, the best potting soil we have: 30% peat moss, mycorrhizae, 3 organic fertilizers, perlite and more.

Mulch depth, and why red fir

Two to three inches of mulch is the typical depth. Thinner than that and weeds push through; much thicker and water has a hard time reaching the soil. Pull it back a few inches from stems and trunks so it is not piled against the bark.

The 1/2" Red Fir Mulch is great for mulching, adding nutrients and organics to your soil as it breaks down. That makes it the one to reach for around vegetables, shrubs and flower beds that you want to feed while you cover them.

Bark comes in two cuts, Medium Bark 1 1/2" and Small Bark 3/4" Nuggets. Bigger pieces tend to break down more slowly and stay put on a slope, and smaller nuggets knit down tighter and look finer in a small bed.

Chapter 03

Which sand: mason, washed concrete or white

Mason Sand is fine and unwashed. Washed Concrete Sand is coarse, washed, and used to mix concrete, and many installers also like it as a bedding layer under pavers. White Sand is the one you pick by color.

The cheap mistake is buying the fine sand for a job that wants the coarse one, or the other way around. If you are unsure which suits a patio, a sandbox or a batch of concrete, tell us what you are building and we will point you at the right pile.

Sand and soil are heavy and a yard goes further than most people expect, so measure first. A yard covers roughly 100 square feet at 3 inches deep.

28 yards of screened topsoil

A big soil order, in two loads

4.6 on Google from 66 reviews

“Ordered 28 yards of screened top soil, it was delivered in two days. They knew what they were doing and were very friendly! The dirt was delivered in two loads and they even gave us some extra time to get moving the first load before coming back with the second. We appreciated this because it meant we didn't have to block our driveway completely with all the dirt.”
