Gravel, rock and decorative stone in Yakima
Basalt chips, drain rock, pea gravel and driveway minus for the work underneath; Montana Rainbow, China White, Champagne, Yellow Pathway and Red Lava for what people see.
Chapter 01
Base rock and top rock do two different jobs
Most gravel projects are really two projects stacked. Under the layer you see sits the rock that carries weight and moves water: 3/4 minus driveway gravel, 1 1/2 drain rock and the basalt chips. On top goes the rock people actually look at, which at our yard means Montana Rainbow, China White, Champagne, Yellow Pathway and Red Lava.
The difference is mostly in the fines. Minus means the crusher dust is left in, and that dust typically packs into the gaps between the stones so a driveway or a path locks up firm. Clean chips and drain rock have the dust taken out, which leaves open space for water to run through.
Sort your list into those two piles before you order. Decorative rock costs a good deal more per yard than base rock, and the tickets below put both side by side so you can see where it makes sense to spend.

How many yards to order
The math is yards times depth. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so at 3 inches deep a yard covers roughly 100 square feet. At 2 inches it stretches to about 160 square feet, and at 6 inches it covers about 55.
Measure the length and width in feet, multiply them, multiply by the depth in feet, then divide by 27. Most people order a little over, because a base layer settles once it is compacted and nobody wants to come back for half a yard.
Our dump truck hauls up to 12 yards of rock or 15 tons, whichever comes first, and several of the gravels are discounted by the full truckload. For a smaller job, pull a pickup into the yard and the loader fills it. Bring your measurements and we will check the number with you.
Chapter 03
Why rock sinks, and why it wanders
Rock that sits straight on bare soil sinks. Over a season the stones work down into the dirt and the dirt works up between them, and a bed that looked deep in spring looks thin by fall. Fabric under the rock and an edge around it, steel or stone, typically stop most of that.
Shape matters as much as depth. 7/8 round and pea gravel are rounded, which feels good underfoot and looks soft, but they roll, so on a slope or a drive they drift toward the edges. Crushed chips and 3/4 minus have faces that lock together and mostly stay where you put them.
For a path that has to stay flat, a compacted base of 3/4 minus under the rock you like is the usual answer. For a bed you only look at, rounded rock is fine.

Decorative rock is priced like decoration
Champagne, Montana Rainbow, China White and Yellow Pathway sell by the yard, and the rainbow chips, rounds and cobble also come in a super bag, a super sack or a basket. A top layer usually only needs to be deep enough to hide the base, so the good base underneath does most of the work.
