Ready-mix · Short loads from a quarter yard

Short-load ready-mix concrete in Yakima, from a quarter yard

Tow one of our trailers home with 1/4 to 1 3/4 yards, or have our 3 1/2 yd truck bring it to you. We are the Short-Load Specialists.

Chapter 01

Two ways to get concrete: tow a trailer home, or let the truck come to you

We have two options for you. You can come pick up one of our trailers, or we can deliver to you in our 3 1/2 yd truck. The trailers carry from a quarter yard up to 1 3/4 yards, which is usually enough for a set of steps, a pad for an air conditioner or a small patio. The truck is for the pour that is bigger than a trailer but nowhere near a full-size mixer load.

Check the size before you choose. Length in feet times width in feet times thickness in inches, divided by 12, gives cubic feet, and 27 cubic feet make a yard. A 10 by 10 foot pad at 4 inches thick works out to a little under 1 1/4 yards, and most people order a bit over that to cover uneven ground and spillage. Bring your numbers to the yard and we will work out the yards with you.

Trailer prices are on the ticket below, with the tow requirements right under it so you know your truck qualifies before you drive over. We do not post truck delivery prices, so for the truck, call the yard with the address, the yardage and the day you want it.

Why a smaller truck is the better truck for a driveway job

A smaller truck can get into areas that larger trucks cannot. It is also lighter, so there is less chance of damaging property such as a driveway or a lawn. Scheduling is more flexible, and we operate on Saturdays, which is when a lot of home projects actually get done.

That is why we call ourselves the Short-Load Specialists, and why the truck says so on the side: SHORT LOAD Ready Mix Concrete, with the yard's phone number underneath.

Concrete does not wait while you find a wheelbarrow. Before the truck is scheduled, most people have the forms set, the base compacted and the helpers lined up. We provide you with color, stamps, tools, forms, sealers and the knowledge to make your project a success.

Chapter 03

Admixtures: what goes in the batch when the weather is against you

Quality concrete starts with the proper admixtures. In hot weather, delay admixtures slow the set of freshly placed concrete and offset the accelerating effect of high temperatures, so it does not stiffen prematurely and you have more time to place it. In cold weather, accelerating admixtures raise the rate of cement hydration, which helps the concrete set and gain early strength. Dose rates of accelerator vary with the temperature at the job site.

Air entrainment increases the durability of hardened concrete, especially in climates subject to freeze-thaw, and it makes the concrete easier to work while it is still plastic. It is used for exterior applications, so tell us when the slab is going outside.

A water reducing super plasticizer is added to the mix before it is poured. Because less water is needed to keep the concrete workable, strength can go up by as much as 25%. Ask which of these your pour needs, and when the weather is borderline, call before you schedule.

Seven load sizes, one price each, as posted on the yard’s own price list. The 1 yd trailer needs at least a 1/2 ton pickup and the 1 3/4 yd trailer a 3/4 ton, so pick the size your tow vehicle can actually pull.

Need color in it, or stamps for the surface? See decorative and stamped concrete, or the rental counter for tools.

Before you back a trailer in

A quarter yard. Our tow-behind trailers take from 1/4 yd to 1 3/4 yd, and our 3 1/2 yd mixer truck delivers small pours that a full-size truck would not bother with. We are the short-load specialists, and we pour on Saturdays.

A valid driver's license, current proof of insurance, a 2 inch ball and a 4 prong flat plug. The 1 yd trailer needs at least a 1/2 ton pickup and the 1 3/4 yd trailer a 3/4 ton. No bumper pull. There is a $150 trailer deposit and two hours of rental time included, then $25 an hour.

Our posted season is March 15 to October 31, Monday to Friday 7 to 4 and Saturday 7 to 3. From November through mid-March the yard runs on appointments, so call (509) 469-3836 before you come down. Hours also depend on the weather: if it is questionable, call before you drive out.
